Red Illumination

'Red Illumination', powder coated aluminium, Height 2 metres.

Andre Stead’s eagerly anticipated ‘Red Illumination’ has arrived at the gallery. Red is the colour of passion! A ballet dancers passion for her art is beautifully depicted in this powerful sculpture. ‘Red Illumination’ showcases a dancing figure suspended in a pirouette, poised on the edge of her balance. Her upper body pulls into a directional distortion of form that emphasizes her apparent movement. On the figure’s back is a jagged line that forms a continuous edge around the internal and external surface of the artwork. This line represents the boundary between the conscious and subconscious mind, each dependent on the other for balance, and continuously influencing one another.

LOUIS NEL 17.8.13
17.8.13, Oil on canvas, 120 x 150 cm

Before the dawn of a new day, when stillness greets and freshness defines one’s state of mind, these are periods of contemplation, reflection and peace. Gazing upon the soft landscapes and seascapes of Louis Nel’s work transports one to that quiet contemplative state. His works employ soft lines and muted tones, nothing in them captures the thought processes into a form or appearance. This characteristic of his work is what allows the mind to drift, drift where it may go, to form associations and to heighten sensations and emotions like a grand piece of music.
